Tonight the lovely Mrs. Jib and I had a very nice dinner, and then we took our bottle of wine outside to enjoy a fire. We had planned to go to a local fireworks display, but why bother when everyone in your neighborhood has dropped a Benjamin or more on fireworks that are supposedly illegal?
When I was a kid, I hated Wisconsin's fireworks laws. It was always a treat when a relative had gone to South Dakota and picked illegal fireworks like Roman Candles or bottle rockets. Now fireworks like that are kids stuff, even though they are technically illegal. To be fair, I've always been very sympathetic to repealing existing fireworks laws in Wisconsin. At least until I bought a house. When I started to hear the hot pieces of aerial shells rain down on my roof, I became much less sympathetic. But as I sit in my backyard and watch arsenals of fireworks explode in the skies of my neighborhood, I realize that there is no desire on the part of the state or local authorities to enforce the laws on the books. Yes, it irritates me to think of the potential fire hazard these fireworks pose to my property, but if there is no desire or effort on the part of the state to enforce a law, please, just do away with it already.
