Many, many bloggers are drawing an analogy between Bush's first debate and Reagan's first debate in 1984. Stop, please. It is a bad analogy. After Reagan's rough performance, he dropped in the polls from a 17% lead to a 13%. Dramatic but insignificant. Bush had a much smaller buffer in the polls, and he gave back his entire lead. Is it possible to lose the first debate and still win the Presidency? Undoubtedly, but you would have to perform from that date on. This president cannot just throw his hat out on the field and beat Kerry. The focus needs to be on what Bush needs to do from here on out, not on a weak analogy.
